The documentary "Cracking the Maya Code" about the story of the decipherment of the Maya writing system will be shown tonight at 8pm at your local PBS TV station as an episode of Nova. It's actually the shortened version of "Breaking the Maya Code", a 2-hour documentary loosely based on Michael D Coe's book of the same name (which is a great book IMHO).

The website of the program is located at:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/mayacode/

You can check your local TV listing at:

If you happen to miss the TV broadcast, you'll be able to watch it online on Wednesday.

You knew I'd say something!!!!!!!!
Watching was an event at my house. My hubby took Linda Schele's death pretty hard when it happened. He had been allowed to work on a Yucatan dig she was at in the mid 80's..so seeing her talking with the word "deceased" after her name was tough. On the bright side, he also thought that Michael Coe had passed away, so seeing that he was alive and well was a joy. I don't think hubby learned anything new, but I finally figured out why I can't make sense of any of the glyphs. It's NOT FAIR that one "sound" can be depicted a dozen different ways..and identical glyphs can be so stylized that I can't tell that an iguana head is an iguana head from stela to stela because they look nothing alike to me. :) I came away with a sense of LOVE for my alphabet. I also came away with the knowledge that I had not dusted off the Coe, Schele, and Aveni books om the shelves as part of spring cleaning, yet.

Michael Coe isn't gone yet but he is looking a bit ancient though. But I think he's still in pretty good condition. He still goes down to Mexico to check out new discoveries.

Unless I keep it up frequently, Maya glyphs don't stick too well in my head. And they didn't mention that the some glyphs can stand both for sounds and words. That makes me crossed-eye.

Thanks...

I feel better knowing that you don't think I'm a complete imbecile considering how many of these books I've skimmed and how many of these engravings I've seen. My brain just doesn't seem to wrap around these things, even though I am fascinated by the form and function of it all. My hubby just seems to "get" it..making me think that his attraction to everything meso-american is a holdover from a previous life. Yes..that's it..he has "inside" information!!!! :)
